إن الإقتصاد القياسي علم يتكون من أربعة علوم إقتصادية ورياضية أساسية إذ يضم النظرية الإقتصادية بفرعيها الجزئي والكلي ومن ثم الرياضيات ألبحته والمتخصصة والأساليب الإحصائية أو ما يعرف بالإحصاء الرياضي والسبب الذي اعتمد الإقتصاد القياسي لهذه العلوم هو إن الظاهرة الإقتصادية التي تضم في طياتها كل المشاكل الإقتصادية تشمل على كل العلاقات الإقتصادية التي تمثلها بما يسمى عناصر الظاهرة التي تحدد علاقات الظاهرة الإقتصادية ومن هذا يجب أن نفهم حقيقة هذه الظاهرة بعناصرها وعلاقاتها وهذا لا يتم إلا بإستخدام النظرية الإقتصادية التي تبين التحليل الدقيق لعلاقات الظاهرة الإقتصادية والتي تحدد عناصر الظاهرة والتي تعرف بالمتغيرات الإقتصادية التي هي أيضاً تمثلا لعلاقات الإقتصادية محل البحث والتدقيق إلا أن هذا غير كافي لفهم هذه العلاقات ومن ثم الظاهرة برمتها إلا تمثيل تلك الظاهرة بعلاقات دقيقة لعناصر الظاهرة وهذا لا يتم إلا بإستخدام العلاقات الرياضية الدقيقة وصيغها الرياضية ومن ثم إستخدام النماذج التي تحوي هذه الظاهرة برمتها إلا إن هذا غير كافي لإعطاء تبريرات مقنعة ما لم يصاحبها الإختبارات الإحصائية والقياسية لتصبح الظاهرة متمثلة بنماذج رياضية قياسية معتمدة على الإختبارات الإحصائية والقياسية وبالتالي يكون النموذج ممثلاً حقيقياً لتفسير وتأويل الظاهرة المقصودة، ومن هذا فإن الإقتصاد القياسي يستند إلى أربعة أركان أساسية مترابطة مع بعضها البعض وإن فقد أي من هذه الأركان فإن الإقتصاد القياسي يكون قاصراً على إعطاء التأويلات الحقيقة للظاهرة الإقتصادية.
