أدت السنوسية دورًا دينيًا وسياسيًا، امتزج فيه التصوف بالدعوة إلى الاجتهاد في الفقه والتشريع، وقامت بدور مهم في نشر الإسلام في إفريقيا وجنوب الصحراء، ووقفت موقف الحذر من الحكم العثماني في برقة وطرابلس الغرب وفزان، وشغلت موقعًا ملحوظًا في ساحة مقاومة الاحتلال الإيطالي لليبيا والاحتلال الفرنسي لبلاد الشمال الإفريقي بوجه عام.
وبعد الحرب العالمية الثانية استقلت ليبيا كدولة اتحادية تحت حكم الملك إدريس السنوسي الأول، وبدأت الدولة في عهده نهضتها الحديثة، فاهتمت بالتعليم، وافتتحت المدارس بمختلف أنواعها، وأسست الجامعة الليبية عام 1958 في بنغازي التي اقتصرت آنئذ على كليتي "الآداب والتجارة"، ثم افتتحت جامعة أخرى في طرابلس عام 1964 ضمن كلية العلوم، وفي سنة 1963 أقام الملك إدريس حكومة دستورية، وأقر مجلس النواب الليبي توحيد ليبيا، وإلغاء نظام الاتحاد الفيدرالي، ونص الدستور على أن ليبيا جزء من الوطن العربي وقسم من القارة الإفريقية.
والكتاب الذي نقدمه اليوم للقارئ العربي يتناول بالتفصيل والتحليل حياة وعصر الملك محمد إدريس السنوسي، آخر زعماء الأسرة السنوسية التي سقطت على يد من كانوا يسمون "بالضباط الأحرار" ومنهم معمر القذافي.. إن الملك إدريس السنوسي لم يقتل الليبيين بل قاتل من أجل الليبيين، أما ما تسمى بالأنظمة الاشتراكية والثورات التي تمخضت عنها هذه الأنظمة لم تجلب إلا الدمار لدولها، كما حدث في ليبيا وكوريا الشمالية وغيرها، فقد قامت هذه الثورات "ظاهريًا" من أجل الشعوب، لكنها كانت تخفي وججها الإجرامي، ووضعت السلطة بيد حاكم واحد.
