يعد البطريرك "أسطفان الدويهي" المتوفي سنة 1704 أول من اعتنى بتدوين سلسلة لبطاركة الطائفة المارونية وقد عثر في مكتبته على مدون أثبت فيه أسماء بطاركة الطائفة من عهد القديس مار يوحنا مارون إلى أيامه ومعروف أن بطاركة الموازنة قد غيروا مواقع كراسيهم حسب مقتضيات الزمان مراراً عديدة قبل أن يجعلوا سكناهم في قنوبين حيث حكم آباء المجمع اللبناني أن يكون دير قنوبين كرسياً ثابتاً للبطاركة.
وقد كانت مهمة المؤلف في غاية الصعوبة بسبب تلف الكتب التاريخية من جراء الحروب والاضطرابات ما اضطره إلى بذل المزيد من الجهد في التنقيب والبحث ليتمكن من الوصول إلى أسماء البطاركة الذين ترجم لهم. ولم يكن مقصود المؤلف الأخبار عن جميع الرؤساء الذين رأسوا كرسي إنطاكية منذ بطرس إلى يومه بل منذ انقسم مسيحيو إنطاكية إلى ثلاثة طوائف هي الروم والموارنة واليعاقبة.
وقد عمد الناشر إلى مقابلة كلام الدويهي، في المخطوطة التي عثر عليها مع ما جاء في المجمع اللبناني بشأن سلسلة البطاركة، فأثبت ما في المخطوطة، ورد بعض ما جاء فيها إلى مصادره الأولى. وقد أصلح ما فيها عبارة المؤلف ما خالف أصول الأعراب وترك الباقي كما صدر من قلمه.
إطلاعاً للقارئ على حال العربية وفصاحتها عند اللبنانيين الذين كانوا حديثي عهد بها آنذاك وقد وضع الناشر دراسة عن البطريرك اسطفان الدويهي، إضافة إلى فهرس هجائي لأسماء الأعلام الواردة في هذا الكتاب وملحق عن يوحنا مارون أول بطريرك ماروني بقلم المطران يوسف الدبس.
