هذا عمل نادر في تميزه، وسبب هذا التميز أن مؤلفه يعد واحداً من أكبر علماء الأنثروبولوجيا الفيزيقية على الصعيد العالمي، كما ظل كبيرهم على الإطلاق لعدة عقود في الولايات المتحدة إبان القرن الماضي، وهو متميز أيضاً لأن مترجمه كبير علماء الأنثروبولوجيا العرب الأستاذ الدكتور أحمد أبو زيد, يشمل هذا الكتاب جزءاً كبيراً يدور حول نشأة الإنسان الأول ومظاهر حضارته وفنونه في عصور ما قبل التاريخ، كما يتناول بالدراسة مظاهر الحياة والتقدم البشري في مجتمعات قائمة الآن بالفعل سواء في أمريكا وأفريقيا وأستراليا، وبهذا يميل المؤلف إلى القول بأن هذه المجتمعات ذاتها تمثل المراحل الأولى للإنسانية نظراً لبدائيتها وتأخرها، فالكتاب في حقيقته دراسة لنشأة الإنسان والمجتمع البدائيين وتطورهما، وتحليل لبعض النظم الإجتماعية البدائية، وبذلك هو أقرب إلى الأنثروبولوجيا العامة بفرعيها الفيزيقي والإجتماعي منه إلى ما قبل التاريخ، وقد خصص المؤلف فصلاً طويلاً للهنود الحمر في أمريكا ومظاهر ثقافتهم، وفصلاً آخر لدراسة المراكز الأولى للحضارة في آسيا ومصر وكريت.
