كثر الإهتمام نسبياً بالكتابة عن العلاقة بين المرض والسلطة، وتحديداً المرض النفسي، إلا أن هذا الكتاب قد يكون متفرداً عن كثير من الكتب المماثلة، كون مؤلفه قد خاض غمار المجالين، فقد بدأ طبيباً متخصصاً في الطب العصبي وتدرب أيضاً في تخصص الطب النفسي ثم زعيماً حزبياً فوزيراً للخارجية البريطانية.
يورد المؤلف قصص الأمراض الجسدية والنفسية لرؤساء أميركيا ورؤساء الحكومات البريطانية وزعماء آخرين تقاطعوا مع أحداث مهمة لموضوع الكتاب، ويفصل في إشكالات علاجهم للحساسيات المتوقعة.
غير أن مفاجأة الكتاب الأبرز هي محاولة إقتراح محددات لإضطراب الشخصية المكتسب بفعل ممارسة السلطة، بمعنى أنه وخلافاً للتعريف الكلاسيكي لمحددات إضطراب الشخصية كما في التصنيفات المعتمدة للأمراض النفسية التي تلزم ان تكون محددات إضطرابات الشخصية تجلت في سن الثامنة عشر، فإن المؤلف يحاج بأن القوة قد تولد إضطراباً لمن مارسها وإن تجاوز هذا العمر، إذ ثمة أسوياء تجاوزوا العقدين الأوليين من العمر، وما إن يتمكنوا من السلطة لحولين كاملين مع نجاحات ينتشي لها الزعيم، فالمرجع ظهور سمات وطبائع: "متلازمة الغطرسة: Hubris Syndrome".
والشخصية المتغطرسة بسبب ثمالة القوة تتصف بالغرور والطيش وفرط الثقة، ورفض كل من لا يبجل، وشعور رسالي أن من لا يبارك كل أفعاله هو أحمق أو شيطان، بل ويمشي متبختراً، وتتغير حتى طريقة كلامه، ثم ينغمس إلى طمأنينة أن آراء من لا يتفقون معه إلى سعير، وأن محكمة الأرض ليست له ولأمثاله وأن التاريخ وحده سينصفه.
