يتعرّض المعماري العراقي المعروف رفعة الجاردجي في كتابه هذا إلى مسألتين، أولهما: كيف تطوّرت النواة الفكرية لنظرية جدليّة العمارة، وثانيتهما: وصف للأبنية التي أنجزها المؤلف مع العديد من زملائه العاملين بصفته مهندساً معمارياً.
وهذا الكتاب لا يسرد تاريخ العمارة في العراق ولا يسرد تاريخ ما قام المؤلف بممارسته، وهو كتاب لا ينحصر في مسألة معمارية معينة، وإنما يشمل موضوعات عديدة ذات صلة أساسية بفن العمارة من خلال تجربة وممارسة شخصية وعامة على مدار ربع قرن.
وتتركز هذه التجربة في أربعة عناصر هي: "موقف المعمار الممتهن من الممارسة، وظروفها الإجتماعية"، "موقف المجتمع بين الممارس ومن الممارسة"، "والموضع التكنولوجي القائم في القطر لكل مرحلة وتطوره، ومقدار إرتباطه بالتقدم الجاري في العالم الخارجي"، بالإضافة إلى "المؤثّرات الفكرية المحلية والدولية في مختلف الحقول الفنية المعمارية".
