بعد قراءاته المنتقاة، أصبح حاتم من أهل الطريقة كما يسميها المتصوفة. ولكنها طريقته الخاصة. ليست بالطريقة الملازمة للحقيقة. إنما محض طريقة يقيل بها عثراته للحظات يحوم فيها حول الحمى حتى يقع. فإذا وقع أندسّ كل شيء معه في أخدود ملتهب يخرج صديداً من عينيه. مرّ عليه ما مرّ من الأيام التي أقعدت جسده وروحه. يتأبط رواية غرامية ويترك أخرى. وكأنه يحمل عشقاً لمعشوق لم يُخلق بعد. لم يعد حاتم يميز بين الحزن والفرح. فكل ذلك سيان، وبحسب طريقته، كان ذلك هو العشق. لا بدّ من أن مسرح المولوية في قونية رمَى إليه بشهاب طارق، فطرق قلبه وعقله. كل ما يعلمه أن لهيبَ البركان قد جفّف أيامه ورطّب أجفانه. ""إني سقيم"" رددها حاتم، وقال:
كيف يُحيي القلبَ أيامٌ يَباسْ
لست أدري، إنّما الجهل مِراس
ليس شأني إن يُدَجّيْ الـليلَ دمعٌ
أو يعاطي العشقَ أنّاتُ النِفاسْ
إنني عبءٌ على العُـشّاقِ إنّي
إذ هُمُ ما بين أشواقٍ وكاس
تائِهٌ ما بين كَــــوْني أمــةً
أُخرجت للناس أو محضَ اقتباس"
