هذا أول كتاب يصل إلينا فى موضوع الفرق بين الإنسان والحيوان والطير، لعالم جليل من علماء القرن الثانى الهجرى وأوائل الثالث، وهو أبو على محمد بن المستنير، المعروف بقطرب، تلميذ سيبوية الملازم لبابه. وعلى الرغم من ضياع كثير من تراث "الفرق" فى العربية، فإن ما وصل إلينا منه لا بعد شيئاً قليلاً. وأقدمه على الإطلاق كتاب "قطرب" هذا، ويليه كتاب "أبى سعيد عبد الملك بن قريب الأصمعى".
وإن اختلاف تسمية أعضاء الجسم ووظائفه الحيوية بين الإنسان والحيوان والطير، كان - كما قلت فى مقدمتى لتحقيق الفرق لابن فراس - الأمور التى لفتت أنظار اللغويين العرب القدامى. وقد أحتفظت العربية الفصحى، فى كل هذه الأمور وغيرها، بثروة لفظية كبيرة، فحافظت بذلك على إحساس الإنسان الأول، بأن العضو الواحد، وإن خلق لوظيفة معينة، فى كل من الإنسان والحيوان والطير، فإن شكله المختلف، وتكوينه المتباين، عند كل نوع من هذه الأنواع، قد كان مبرراً كافياً لدى هذا الإنسان الأول، ليخالف التسمية بإختلاف شكل المسميات.
أما كتاب "قطرب" الذى نقدم له اليوم، فقد سبق أن نشر مختصراً، بمجلة فى فينا سنة 1888 م، بعناية المستشرق "رودلف جاير" ثم وجد أخى وصديقى الأستاذ الدكتور خليل إبراهيم العطية نسخة كاملة من الكتاب، فحققة من جديد، ولم يضن عليه وقت أو جهد، فقابل المخطوط بالمطبوع، وخرج النصوص، وترجم للأعلام، وقدم للكتاب، وصنع له الفهارس المفيدة النافعة، ثم وكل إلى أمر مراجعته والإشراف على طبعه، وتصحيح تجاربه، حتى يخرج الكتاب على الصورة التى تليق به.
