قد وصف ابن سينا هذه الرسالة بنفسه عندما قال فى بدئها بعد الحمدلله:
أما بعد فقد سألنى بعض من ينتهم إلى أن أذكر له رسالة مشتملة على حقائق علم التوحيد على الوجه الذى يجب أن يعتمد فى الله وصفاته وأفعاله، مجانباً جانب التقليد مائلا إلى محض التحقيق على سبيل الاختصار، فأجبته إلى ملتمسه مستعيناً بالله ربنا".
فهى رسالة تدور حول إثبات التوحيد لله سبحانه، وقد استدعى ذلك منه أن يتكلم فيها عن ثلاثة موضوعات:
الأول: عن صفحات الله سبحانه.
الثانى: عن صدور الأفعال عنه:
الثالث: عن قضاء الله وقدره، ومعرفة هذه الثلاثة هو حقيقة التوحيد وبيانها هو بيانه. وقد نهج فى معالجته لهذه الموضوعات نهج مفكر معتمد على نفسه، وعلى وما يوصله إلهي بحقه الخاص، ونظره فى كتاب الله سبحانه الذى أنزل على محمد نبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم.
