على مدى زمنى ممتد، ظللت أتساءل: ما الذى يجمع بين امرئ القيس والمتنبى وأحمد شوقى وأدونيس ومحمود درويش؟ ربما كانت الإجابة المنطقية هى: الشعر، فكل منهم –مع تباعد الأزمنة- شاعر، لكن الحيرة تظل حاضرة داخل الذاكرة، إذ أنه رغم القاسم المشترك بين هؤلاء الشعراء فى أنهم جميعاً –على حد تعبير سارتر- يخدمون اللغة، إلا أن ما يفرق بين نصوصهم أكثر مما يجمع بينهما، حتى أنه لا يكاد يبين وجه شبه بين شعر إمرئ القيس وأدونيس مثلاً، وبالتالى يظل التساؤل مطروحاً والحيرة قائمة.. لقد طرأت على الشعر بامتداد تاريخ الأدب تغيرات كمية فى بنية القصيدة الكلاسيكية، ثم تغيرات نوعية عديدة منذ بزوغ القصيدة الرومانسية، وما تلاها من اتجاهات ومدارس شعرية كثيرة
