إن النص الذي بين أيدينا يرصد بدقة مشكلات علم الكلام، كما يرصد بدقة آراء بعض الفرق والمدارس الكلامية. وقد كان المؤلف حريصًا على أن يوقف القارئ على أوجه الاتفاق والاختلاف بين زعماء المعتزلة أنفسهم... ولهذا كثيرًا ما كان يعود بالقارئ إلى بداية الاعتزال صاعدًا إلى مدرستي البصرة وبغداد. ولم يغب عن المؤلف نقد بعض الديانات سواء الوضعي منها أو السماوي. وقد وقفنا كثيرًا أمام هذا الطابور الطويل من الأعلام... وأمام طابور طويل آخر من المصطلحات الكلامية أو الفلسفية...
وقد آثرنا أن نكتب بهامش التحقيق نبذة مختصرة عن كل علم ذكره المؤلف، كما أننا كتبنا كلمة موجزة عن كل فرقة على حدة وعن بعض المصطلحات الكلامية والفلسفية... وباختصار فإنا قد قمنا بتخريج كل المتكلمين والفلاسفة والفقهاء... إلخ، لقد وجدنا أن ذلك من شأنه أن يفيد شباب الباحثين الصاعدين (على الأقل).
على أن الأمر المهم والأساسي هو أنني حينما عزمت على تحقيق "الفائق" كنت على علم مسبق أنه ملخص للمعتمد. غير أنني، وبعد متابعتي للفائق، اكتشفت بعد قراءة عدة صفحات أن "الفائق" ليس "كله" تلخيصًا لـ"المعتمد"... فثمة أبواب كثيرة تربو على ثلثي كتاب "الفائق" لا وجود لها في الأجزاء الثلاثة التي تم نشرها من كتاب "المعتمد" في أصول الدين. ومن المحتمل أن يكون الجزء الرابع المفقود صلة بالموضوعات التي عالجها الفائق... هذه مسألة يصعب على الباحث المنصف أن يقطع فيها برأي... لكن يبقى الاحتمالان قائمين.
