هو عمل علمي مهم ينشر فيه الاستاذ الدكتور محمد علي حله مجموعة منتقاة من وثائق الأزهر الشريف، وتررجع أهمية المؤسسة التي تتناولها الوثائق، وهي هنا الأزهر الشريف بتاريخه الطويل والعرق، حيث لعب دور المنارة العلمية، ومنبع الوسطية، والمرجعية الأولى لأهل السنة في العالم الإسلامي على مدى أكثر من ألف عام، كما قادد الحركة الوطنية في مصر، وساهم في التطور السياسي والإجتماعي والعلمي للبلاد. والعامل الثاني هو أن جامع الوثائق استاذ بجامعة الأزهر يعلم تارخه ودوره، وعاش في أروقته دهراً طويلاً.
أما العامل الثالث فهو الوثائق المنتقاة نفسها، فهي وثائق أصلية من مقتنيات دار الوثائق القومية، وهي مجموعة متميزة زمتنوعة، تغطي تاريخ الأزهر في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين، وهي ليست مجموعة صغيرة على أية حال، فهي تعد بالمئات، مما يحقق أحد أهم أهداف سلسلة "دراسات وثائقية" وهو إتاحة الوثائق إلى الباحثين أينما كانوا دونما حاجة إلى زيارة دار الوثائق القومية، ولم يكتف الدكتور محمد حله بنشر تلك الوثائق فقط، بل قدم لها بدراسة مطولة شرح فيها آلية افنتقاء، ومنهج النشر، وأهمية الوثائق المنتقاة والتعريف بها.
وقد تنوعت موضوعات الوثائق بحيث تغطي جوانب متعددة من تاريخ هذه المؤسسة العريقة، واهم تلك الموضوعات: وثائق قوانن الإصلاح وإعادة تنظيم الجامع الأزهر، ووثائق مجلس إدارة الأزهر ومجلس الأزهر الأعلى، وكذلك وثائق خاصة بشيوخ الأزهر وعلمائه، وأخرى خاصة بالبعثات العلمية والجاليات الإسلامية في مصر والمؤتمرات الإسلامية، ووثائق خاصة بنظام التعليم في الأزهر وشئون التعليم والطلاب الوافدين، وأخيراً الوثائق الخاصة بدور الأزهر في الحركة الوطنية المصرية، ومن هنا فإن هذا الكتاب يقدم للباحثين في تاريخ الأزهر والحياة الدينية بشكل خاص، وللباحثين في تاريخ مصر الإجتماعي والإقتصادي بشكل عام، مادة تاريخية جديدة كانت مجهولة لأغلبهم، سوف تساهم بالتأكيد في تنمية أبحاثهم وترصينها.
