أولى عدد من الباحثين دراسة الأوضاع العامة في الخليج العربي في الحقبة التي سبقت دخول البرتغاليين للمنطقة مطلع القرن السادس عشر الميلادي، من خلال دراستهم لأهم المراحل التي مر بها ذلك الغزو، الذي جاء أثر الإستكشافات الجغرافية، ومن ثم وصولهم إلى الهند حتى غزوهم الخليج العربي، فتجمعت للدارسين معلومات مهمة عن كل مرحلة من مراحل الغزو البرتغالي في المحيط الهندي والخليج العربي.
غير أن أحداً من الباحثين لم يدرس لنا بصورة مفصلة دور وأهمية مملكة هرمز قبل الغزو البرتغالي وبعده، وما وصلت إليه آنذاك من نفوذ سياسي وإقتصادي جعلها من أكبر الكيانات السياسية الموجودة في الخليج العربي من خلال سيطرتها على عدة مدن ومراكز منه، والأهمية التي شكلتها في التأثير المباشر على أوضاع المنطقة من جهة وعلى تحكمها بطبيعة الوجود البرتغالي فيها من جهة أخرى، وإنعكاس ذلك على طبيعة أوضاعها الداخلية والخارجية، ورغبةً مني للمساهمة المتواضعة في كتابة تاريخ الخليج العربي وإكمال حلقاته المفقودة، أرتأيت كتابة هذه الدراسة المعنونة ((مملكة هرمز في ظل الإحتلال البرتغالي 1500- 1622م))، وهي دراسة عامة لأوضاعها أثناء الغزو البرتغالي للمنطقة.
