يتعاظم يومًا بعد آخر تأثير القنوات الفضائية في حياتنا، مما يستوجب التوقف عندها الانتباه لها ومتابعتها ودراستها باستمرار من قبل المختصين في الشأن الإعلامي. ودراستنا هذه تحاول أن تتعرف على أبعاد التحول الذي يعيشه المجتمع العربي، كأي مجتمع معاصر، من الإنتاج الثقافي (السمعبصري) أو ما يمكن تسميته بثقافة (الصورة)، وهل استطاعت القنوات الفضائية العربية أداء الدور المطلوب في تنمية وتطوير برامجها وموادها الثقافية، وما مدى تأثيرها في تكوين الوعي الثقافي لدى المشاهد العربي؟ هذه الأسئلة البسيطة يطرحها، والعميقة بأبعادها والتي تتفرع منها أسئلة كثيرة تدور في أذهان العديد ممن يتابعون الشأن الإعلامي والشان الثقافي هي التي تحاول الدراسة الإجابة عنها.
وهذه الدراسة تحاول أن تكشف طبيعة الوظيفة الثقافية للقنوات الفضائية العربية، من خلال دراسة ميدانية ورصد ما تقدمه القنوات الفضائية العربية من برامج ثقافية وتحليل مضمون عينات من هذه البرامج. وذلك من خلال فصولها التالية: الفصل الأول (الإعلام المعاصر بين النظرية والتطبيق)، الفصل الثاني (الأصول النفسية والاجتماعية لوسائل الإعلام)، الفصل الثالث (بين الثقافة والصورة)، الفصل الرابع (الإعلام وثقافة الصورة)، الفصل الخامس (العلاقة بين البرامج الثقافة والمشاهد)، الفصل السادس (الإعلام والقيم الأخلاقية).
