إننا جميعاً نستمع إلى الموسيقا الأوركسترالية كل حسب رغباته، ولكن من أجل التحليل، يمكن أن تصبح عملية الإستماع بكاملها أكثر وضوحاً إذا قمنا بتجزئتها إلى عناصرها الأصلية، إن صحّ القول، فنحن جميعاً، وإلى حدٍ ما، نستطع إلى الموسيقا على ثلاثة مستويات منفصلة: المستوى الحسي، وهو الإستمتاع بالصوت الموسيقي من دون تفكير، والمستوى التعبيري، وهو محاولة الوصول إلى المعنى الذي أراده المؤلف من وراء عمله، والمستوى الموسيقي البحث الذي يحتاج إلى مستمع مدرب وواعٍ، إذ عليه أن يسمع الألحان والإيقاعات والهارمونيات المرافقة والألوان النغمية، وفوق كل شيء عليه أن يعرف شيئاً عن الأشكال الموسيقية، شكل السيمفونية، شكل السوناتا، شكل الروندو... إلخ.
هذا الكتاب يساعد المستمع، سواء كان هاوياً أو موسيقياً محترفاً، على الإستماع على المستوى الموسيقي البحت، إذ يتضمن تحليلاً موسيقياً للأعمال مؤلفين كُثر ينتمون إلى عصور مختلفة: عصر الباروك، العصر الكلاسيكي، العصر الرومانتيكي... إلخ.
وقد زود الكاتب كتابه، هذا بــ "نوتات موسيقية لألحان المقطوعات الرئيسية وثيماتها، إضافة إلى ذلك ثمة نبذة قصيرة عن حياة كل مؤلف وعن الظروف والمناسبات التي دفعته إلى تأليف مقطوعته.
