يمثل "تفجير اللغة"، التجلي الواقعي لرغبة شعراء الحداثة في فصل الدال عن المدلول من خلال تغييب المرجع، لذا حاولت الدراسة تقديم لمحة دالة عن السياق التاريخي لنشوء هذه الفكرة، وما ترتب على هذه المحاولة، من أحلام شعرية في الوصول بالشعر إلى حد "النقاء" والخلو من "المرجع"، وتتحول القصيدة إلى لغة تتحدث عن نفسها، وهذه هي أدبية الأدب، وكلما نجحت اللغة في أن تكون إحالتها الداخلية، كان ذلك نجاحها في منظور النقاد، وهذه هي الوظيفة الشعرية عند جاكوبسون و"سمطقة القصيدة" عند ريفاتير، وهو التشكيل الفني في الحداثة.
انتقلت هذه النشوة إلى الثقافة العربية مع شعراء السبعينيات، وأظهروا تقبلهم لها ببيانات وشعارات براقة، ولم يتوقف الأمر عند حد الإعجاب، فحاولوا كتابة شعر عربي يحقق هذه الحالة من غياب الإحالة، مما أثار جدلاً ثقافياً حولها - وكان معظم هؤلاء الشعراء نقاداً - تبناه النقاد الطليعيون، وهذه صفة أطلقوها على أنفسهم تمييزاً لهم عن الذين رفضوا هذا الحلم، واتهموا المحاولة بالعجز والنزق، ومعظم هذا الجدل نظرياً يعيد إلى الأذهان، بصورة ما - الجدل التراثي حول "القدامى والمحدثين".
تحمل الدراسة مهمة تقديم نموذج شعري حاول تطبيق هذه الأفكار، فترصد ملامح هذه التجربة، ومدى النجاح والإخفاق الذي رافقها، موضحة القيمة الفنية لها، من خلال ديوان محمد عفيفي مطر، الذي يبدو شاعراً مميزاً جداً في تجربته الشعرية، ومتفرداً في مجاله.
