ولد صاحب السمو الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد بن صقر القاسمي في السادس من يوليو عام 1939م بمدينة الشارقة في كنف أسرة فاضلة أعانته في سلوك درب الحمد والفضيلة من خلال القيم الإسلامية دونما تزمت أو تفريط. ترعرع صاحب السمو على حب العلم والمعرفة، وكان شغوفا جدا بتاريخ وطنه، وهو لا يزال راعيا للأدب والثقافة والفن، وينعكس ذلك على إمارته التي تزدهر بالمراكز والمحافل الثقافية، وتشارك في كل ما يخدم هذه المجالات الحيوية في بناء الحضارة. يحكم صاحب السمو الشيخ الدكتور سلطان بن محمد القاسمي إمارة مترامية الأطراف، حيث أن إمارة الشارقة هي الإمارة الوحيدة التي لها حدود مع جميع إمارات الدولة. ولطالما كانت هذه الإمارة مسرحا للأحداث السياسية الهامة، والخلافات بين أبناء الأسرة الحاكمة، ولكنها اليوم تنعم بالاستقرار والرفاهية في ظل هذا الحاكم العادل
تنقل فيما بين الشارقة ودبي والكويت لإكمال التعليم الابتدائي والتكميلي والثانوي .

دكتوراه الفلسفة في التاريخ بامتياز، جامعة إكستر 1975، المملكة المتحدة.
دكتوراه الفلسفة في الجغرافيا السياسية للخليج، جامعة دورهام، 1999م، المملكة المتحدة.
دكتوراه فخرية من جامعة تيوبنجن الألمانية في 30 أكتوبر 2006
- عضو فخري في معهد الدراسات العضو فخري في معهد الدراسات الأفريقية جامعة الخرطوم بجمهورية السودان منذ العام 1977. - منحته جامعة إكستر بالمملكة المتحدة الدكتوراه الفخرية في الآداب عام 1985. - كما منحته جامعة الخرطوم بجمهورية السودان الدكتوراه الفخرية في الحقوق عام 1992. - وهو عضو فخري بمركز الدراسات الشرق أوسطية والإسلامية بجامعة دور هام بالمملكة المتحدة . - وفي عام 1999 منحه اتحاد الفنانين التشكيليين العالمي ( اياب ) في باريس دبلوم الشرف عن جهوده في إحياء الفنون الدولية.
كما حصد الكثير من الجوائز والميداليات العالمية
Book Description
After the exhibition of historic maps in Sharjah, many people asked me to publish the collection to benefit both researchers and the general public interested in the history of the Gulf.
The names of many sites and towns have been distorted in translation through time. The maps are presented chronologically and record the political and colonial changes that the Gulf region has undergone.
Vadana that appears on many of the maps should be read as Ath'an, the White Mosque that is referred to is in fact a grave on the top of the mount in Sha'am which is called the Sannam and the name Inguir is an early distortion of Umm Al Qwain. These are but three examples of the interesting and intriguing historical subtleties contained in these maps when you study them closely.
I hope that this collection will allow researchers, collectors and those interested in the history of the Gulf to compare the early maps with the highly accurate maps prepared by the cartographers of the twentieth century.
