يلعب الجيش دوراً مهماً في الحياة العامة، حتى أنه أصبح في العديد من دول آسيا وأفريقيا وأميركا اللاتينية يلعب أحياناً أدواراً مزدوجة، فهو يقوم تارة بدور مؤسسة رسمية وتارة أخرى يمثل دور مؤسسة سياسية خاصة وأحياناً يلعب الدورين معاً والجيش العراقي أحد الجيوش التي لعبت دوراً هاماً في الأحداث السياسية التي عاشها العراق منذ قيام الدولة الحديثة فيه، حيث كان له الأثر الكبير في حركة سنة 1941 التحررية، حيث حاول الإنكليز بشتى الوسائل أن يكون الجيش العراقي مجرد قوة بوليسية تحل محل احتلالهم العسكري وانتدابهم المباشر. لكن هذه المحاولات باءت بالفشل إذ نظر الشعب العراقي إلى جيشه نظرة وطنية دائماً، وقد كانت ميول الجيش العراقي القومية تنمو منذ البداية جنباً إلى جنب مع شعوره بضرورة المحافظة على الوحدة الوطنية. وقد كانت المعارضة العسكرية التي أدت إلى انتفاضة 1941، نتيجة حتمية للصراع الموضوعي الطويل بين الشعب العراقي المضطهد والاستعمار البريطاني الغاشم المسيطر على البلاد.
إن مؤلف هذا الكتاب وهو يعرض لصفحة مشرقة من تاريخ الجيش العراقي، قد اعتمد في إعداد هذا الكتاب على مصادر مختلفة تشمل وثائق إنكليزية، ووثائق عربية وألمانية، إضافة إلى دراسات وأبحاث تتصل بموضوع البحث لمؤرخين وكتاب عرب وأجانب. كما استفاد المؤلف من المذكرات الشخصية العربية المنشورة وكان أهمها مذكرات رشيد عالي الكيلاني وصلاح الدين الصباغ ومفتي فلسطين الحاج محمد أمين الحسيني وطه الهاشمي وتوفيق السويدي وغيرهم.
