يعتبر بحق نتاجاً لسنوات طويلة من جهود بحثية وتدريسية تراكمت لدى المؤلف ليترجم- بتعمق الخبير وإيضاح المتمكن- في صفحات قليلة نسبياص تحليلاً للفكر السياسي خلال مرحلة طويلة تمتد من أفلاطون أبي الفلسفة السياسية حتى الإمام محمد عبده صاحب مدرسة التجديد في الفكر الإسلامي المعاصر مبرزاً أهم الإتجاهات الفكرية المعاصرة: الليبرالية الغربية، والإشتراكية، والتجديد في الفكر الإسلامي. ومحاولاً إيجاد علاقة إرتباط بين الأفكار السياسية لكل مفكر والظروف والأوضاع والمؤسسات التي عاصرها، وكيف أن كل مفكر والظروف والأوضاع والمؤسسات التي عاصرها، وكيف ان كل مفكر كان يلعب دور السبب والنتيجة: فتأثر وأثر في نفس الوقت في تطور الفكر السياسي. كما تناولت هذه الطبعة الجديدة تحليل آخر تطورات الفكر الإشتراكي في ظل البيريسترويكا وآنعكاساتها، وقد حرص المؤلف على أن يميز مؤلفه عما سبق من المراجع في نفس المجال وذلك: بتقديم رؤية جديدة من خلال الإعتماد على المراجع الصلية، وتحليل الأفكار بدلاً من تأريخها، فضلاً عن الإهتمام الخاص بالفكر الإسلامي، وقد أضاف المؤلف بهذا الكتاب إلى المكتبة العربية جديداً طالما كانت في حاجة إليه.
