تعددت وجهات نظر المؤرخين الجزائريين، فيما يتعلق بتاريخ الجزائر والتأليف والتصنيف والكتابة فيه، ولم تقتصر كتابة هؤلاء المؤرخين على فترة الإحتلال، وما أعقبها من تطورات، بل شملت الفترات التي سبقت مرحلة الإحتلال هاته؛ كالوجود الروماني والبيزنطي، والفتوحات العربية الإسلامية، والعهد التركي، ومرحلة الثورات الشعبية، والحركة الوطنية، والثورة الجزائرية، فقد كانت كتاباتهم وتآليفهم، تسعى وراء الحقيقة التاريخية، مع الإختلاف البين في طريقة المعالجة، وتنوع الموضوعات والإشكاليات.
وفي الخطاب التاريخي الجزائري، ومع المؤرخين المخضرمين، يلقانا أبو حامد المشرفي، من أبرز الشخصيات الفكرية الثقافية الرائدة، التي ذاع صيتها بالجزائر وفي الأقطار المغاربية، في كتاباته التاريخية الرائدة، وفي رحلاته سواء داخل المغرب أو الجزائر أو الحجاز، وفي تاريخ الأنساب والأحباب، وتاريخ الأشراف والشمائل، وتاريخ الدول وذخائر الأوائل والأواخر.
وكتب المؤرخ صالح العنتري المخضرم كتاباته بأسلوب بسيط، ولغة متواضعة يفهمها الجميع، لكنه أكثر من الأخطاء اللغوية، والكتاب (فريدة منيسة / تاريخ قسنطينة)، عبارة عن سرد مختصر لتاريخ بايات قسنطينة بأسلوب الحوليات، استعرض فيه الأحداث السياسية والعسكرية والتنظيمات الإدارية لبعض البايات، واهتم بصورة خاصة بالحروب، التي نشبت بين البايلك وتونس.
ومن الرواد في الكتابة التاريخية، المؤرخ المخضرم، أحمد بن عمر بن العطار، المعروف بالحاج أحمد المبارك القسنطيني، فهو من المخضرمين الذين أدركوا عهدين (العهد التركي والعهد الفرنسي)، فعاش النصف الأول من عمره مع الأتراك، ونصفه الثاني مع الفرنسيين، وأبو يعلى الزواوي في تاريخ زواوة، ومع تاريخ و"مرآة المرأة المسلمة"، وهو من أعلام خطاب النهضة في الإصلاح، مع كوكبة من مشاهير العلماء والزعماء السياسيين.
