في مجموعتين الآوليين: "المبعدون"، و"واحد ضد الجميع"- ومن العنوان نفسه- كان إدريس على يرسم النغمة الأساسية التي ستقود اللحن؛ بحيث تصبح أعماله بعد ذلك تنويعات متعددة على هذه النغمة الأساسية، ان تقف وحدك، مع روحك وذاتك، ضد العوامل التي تسمح بإبعاد الإنسان وتهميشه، بدءاً من الأفكار العنصرية الأولي للقبيلة والجماعة، والأفكار الطبقية بكل تجلياتها، والنفي المتعمد داخل الوطن وخارجه، ضد القيم السلبية التي يجري التكريس لها وجعل قانونها هو السائد أن تقف بعيداً، خارج الصف والسطر والطابور، تلك هي النغمة الأساس التي سنرى تنويعاتها خصوصاً في "دنقلة"، و"انفجارجمجمة"، و"مشاهد من الجحيم"، و"تحت خط الفقر"، وتلك أيضاً كانت النغمة الأساسية نفسها التي جسدتتها لغة رواياته الأخيرة، في صورة السرد بضمير المخاطب، الذي يعكس انقساماً كاملاً بين الراوي وعالمه، وبين الراوي ونفسه، حول البذرة النوبية البعيدة، تخلق عالم إدريس على الخصب، وسرعان ما نمت هذه البذرة، وتحولت إلى شجرة امتدت ظلالها إلى الوطن المصري، وإلى وطن الإنسان في كل مكان على الأرض.
