وكنت قد امتنعت عن قراءة الصحف في الفترة الماضية، حتى لا أصدم بقراءة أي خبر عن موعد زفاف "ستلا".. ومع ذلك فقد سألت الآنسة "هافيشام" متردداً: هل تم الزواج..؟! فأومأت برأسها وقالت بحسرة: نعم..! وفي الحال تبدى الألم في ملامح وجهي.. وأحسست بأن قلبي يتمزق في صدري.. ومع ذلك، فقد لاحظت أن الآنسة "هافيشام" أخذت تلهث وتتنهد.. وسقطت عصاها من يدها.. وقالت بصوت يرتعش ألماً: أرى في وجهك الآن يا "بيب".. نفس مشاعر الألم التي تبدت في ملامح وجهي منذ سنين طويلة.. في الساعة التاسعة إلا عشرين دقيقة..! وخبأت وجهي بين يدي.. حتى أستعيد رباطة جأشي.. وظت الآنسة "هافيشام" تنوح وتبكب بحرقة.. وتهز رأسها بحركة دائبة يمنة ويسرة.. وتقول والندم يعصر قلبها: ما هذا الذي فعلت.. ما هذا الذي فعلت..؟! وأوشكت أن أقول لها أنها خربت حياتي وحطمتني.. ولكني امتنعت لأن ذلك لايعدو أن يكون نصف الحقيقة.. أما النصف الآخر فيتمثل في الأخطاء الجسيمة التي ارتكبتها بنفسي.. وفي الأحلام الغبية التي كانت تدور في خيالي.. وفي الطموحات السخيفة التي كنت أتطلع إليها.. وفي الآمال العديدة الحمقاء التي كنت أسميها الآمال الكبرى..! ولكنها مدت إلي يديها المرتعشتين.. وقالت متويلة والدموع تطفر من عينيها: سامحني يا "بيب".. أرجوك سامحني..!ّ وأمسكت بيديها وقلت: لقد سامحتك وغفرت لك..
