كنا سابقاً نتحكّم بالآلات بإستخدام أدوات ميكانيكية بسيطة مثل الكامات Cams والمسننات Gears والعتلات lervers وأدوات أخرى، ومع مرور الزمن، تطورت الآلات وإزداد تعقيدها، الأمر الذي تطلب منظومات تحكّم أكثر تعقيداً، بدأت تلك المنظومات بإستخدام الحواكم الكهروميكانيكية Relays والمفاتيح Switches بشكل اساسي من أجل تحقيق الوظيفة المطلوبة من منظومة التحكّم، حيث جرى ربط هذه العناصر بأسلاك كهربائية، لذلك سمي بالمنطق المربوط Wired Logic، وكان هذا النوع من التوصيل مقبولاً بالنسبة للآلات التي لا تتطور ولا تحتاج إلى تعديل، ولكن مع تطور تقنية التصنيع وزيادة الرغبة في تحويل المعامل من إنتاج منتج ما إلى منتج آخر، تبعاً لحاجة الأسواق ظهرت مشاكل منظومات التوصيل الكهربائي من حيث صعوبة التعديل والوقت الطويل الذي تحتاجه العملية، وصعوبة إكتشاف الأخطاء إضافة إلى التكلفة المرتفعة.
كلّ تلك المشاكل دعت الصناعيين إلى التفكير في منظومات تحكّم أكثر مرونة، فقامت شركة Modicon الأمريكية في عام 1968، بتصميم وصنع أول منظومة تحكّم قابلة للبرمجة PLC لصالح شركة جنرال موتورز لصناعة السيارات.
يشمل هذا الكتاب مفردات مقرر أنظمة التحكّم القابلة للبرمجة لطلاب قسم التحكّم والأتمتة في المعهد التقاني للهندسة الميكانيكية والكهربائية في جامعتي دمشق وحلب، ويغطي في طياته الجزأين النظري والعملي.
