"إن لغة فورتران قد صممت للتعبير بسهولة عن حلول مسائل الحساب الرقيم، وعلى الأخص المسائل التي تشتمل على العديد من المعادلات الخيرية والمنطقية المعقدة". ولا تزال هذه اللغة شديدة الاستعمال وتدرس في جميع الجامعات والمدارس التي تهتم بالعلوم الهندسية والتطبيقية. وهذا الكتاب يتعلق بشكل خاص بالمصرفات (compiler) فورتران المستعملة على المكنات التالية: Control data series 6000,7000، IBM 360,370 compilers G,H)، univac) serie 1100.
مما يجعله يغطي استعمال اللغة فورتران والبرمجة بها على أية مكنة مهما كان المصرف المستعمل.
