ثارت في الآونة الأخيرة عاصفة عقلية- أو أقل دماغية- حول طه حسين، كان أكثر ما لفت النظر فيها هو هذا الفهم المغلوط والشائه لعميد الأدب العربي طوال السنوات الفائتة.. وطال العجب ممن يتحدث عن طالب العلم الأزهري طه حسين الذي راح يهاجم الأزهر، وعميد الأدب العربي الذي راح يشكك في الشعر الجاهلي والدراسات الإسلامية، والمثقف الذي راح ينسب مصر إلى حضارة البحر المتوسط وكأننا- في رأيه- لا ننتمي إلى الشرق العربي مطلقًا، بل إن هذا "الفرعوني"- كما أطلقوا عليه- صار لا ينتمي إلى أرض الفراعين!.. يقال هذا في عصر نرى خلاله كثيرًا من الأفاكين هنا وهناك يقولون ويكتبون ويحررون الصحف وهم يصيحون بصوت أجش غريب: "مصر أولًا"، ومصر في حقيقة الأمر هانت عليهم، وصارت تمضي- في نظرهم الكليل- في سبيل آخر!
عندئذ اتضح أن أحدًا من المعاصرين يكاد لا يعرف من يكون طه حسين، ولا يقدر مكانته الحقيقة في عالم الثقافة والسياسة والأدب. ولهذا كتبت هذا الكتاب الوثائقي، محاولًا أن أقترب به من طه حسين وعالمه وفكره، وزاعمًا من خلاله أنني أمتلك الوعي التاريخي الذي يؤهلني لتناول ودراسة هذا الأمر.
