خلال الخمسين عاماً الماضية تغيرت العلاقة كثيراً بين الإنسان والبيئة. فقد بدا ظهور حالات غريبة على كوكب الأرض، لقد أصبحت الحضارة الحديثة والبيئة وجها لوجه لكل منها، بالنسبة للبعض افقتصاد والتنمية الإجتماعية تعني ببساطة تدمير البيئة بما يؤدي إلى نهاية كاريثية. الإنتقادات اعتبرت هؤلاء ضد التقدم والتكنولوجيا هذا الخلاف أدى إلى مفهوم جديد سمى البيئيون خلال الثماينات من القرن الماضي. لقد كان هناك تحول كبير نحو حل المشاكل البيئية للهواء والماء والتربة والكائنات البرية والسكان والتلوث والدفء الكوكبي ونقص الأوزون وفقد التنوع الحيوي. وكان الجهد على المستوى الدولي والكوكبي قد حقق الكثير من النجاحات والكثير من الإخفاقات السبب في تلك الإخفاقات يعتقد أنها بسبب نقص المعرفة نحو البيئة والإيكولوجي والوظائف الطبيعية. لقد ثبت ان اللجوء إلى تعليم البيئة أنه هو العلاج.
