ولدت في صباح مشرق في اليوم الرابع عشر من شهر مارس عام 1879 في مدينة أولم، التي تقع على ضفاف نهر الدانوب جنوب ألمانيا في مقاطعة "فورتيمبرج" وكان يبدو أنني طفل قصير وسمين وعنيد، كما كانت تذكرني بذلك جدتي لأمي. كان والدى يدعي "هرمان" وكان يمتلك محلا للتوريدات الكهربائية في ميدان الكاتدرائية، كانت أمي تدعي بولين.. كانت تعشق الموسيقى وتلعب على البيانو بمهارة.
عشنا في أولم وقتاً قصيراً للغاية.. لقد كانت مدينة هادئة، بها كثير من الكنائس، بعضها قديم للغاية وله قيمة كبيرة مثل الكاتدرائية والكنيسة القوطية الضخمة التي لها أعلى برج جرس في العالم، إذ يرتفع حوالى 500 قدم (161 متراً).
بعد ذلك بسنوات عديدة، وفي عام 1922، أطلقوا اسمي على أحد شوارع المدينة.. "شارع آينشتاين". لقد كان ذلك أمراً مثيراً.. ولكن دعنا لا نتحدث كثيراً عن أنفسنا.
عندما كان عمري عاماً واحداً، انتقلنا إلى ميونخ حيث لحقنا هناك بالعم جاكوب، شقيق والدي.. لقد كان العم جاكوب مهندساً، قام بتصميم نوع جديد من مولدات الكهرباء. وكان متأكداً أن الكهرباء هي المستقبل، واستطاع إقناع أبي بأن يشاركه في مهمة إضاءة عاصمة بافاريا. لقد ظن عمي جاكوب أن ذلك سيؤدي إلى عمل ناجح حيث إنه في ذلك الوقت كان يقطن ميونخ أكثر من 300000 مواطن.
بدأت تعلم النطق عندما بلغ عمري ثلاثة أعوام "متأخراً بعض الشئ على شخص عبقري كما قال عني أحد مؤرخي سيرتي الذاتية".. طبعاً كنت أتكلم قبل هذه السن، ولكن المشكلة أن لا أحد يفهمني، لذا فقد كنت أقول الشئ مرتين حتى يكون واضحاً للفهم، ولكن جليسة الأطفال التي كانت بمنزلنا طنت أنني أكرر كل شئ لأني لم أكن ذكيا.
