كان لكتاب الدكتور ديان س. كولبي، الوجيز في الكيمياء الحيوية، صدىً كبيرٌ، وإنتشار واسع بين الطلاّب الدارسين لمقرر الكيمياء الحيوية، وخاصة عند هؤلاء، الذين سيدخلون الإمتحانات العامة، في إختصاصات طبية مختلفة، في الولايات المتحدة، أو في غيرها من الجامعات في العالم.
فالطلاب الدارسون لمقرر موسع بالكيمياء الحيوية، خلال سنواتهم الدارسية، لا بد لهم من كتاب موجز، يُركِّز ويجمع لهم تلك المعلومات المترامية، في نقاط رئيسة، تُساعدهم على تذكرها، وترسيخها في أذهانهم.
ولقد جاء الكتاب، الذي بين أيدينا، ملخصاً لكتاب هاربر، في الكيمياء الحيوية، الذي يُعَدُّ من أفضل المراجع لطلاب الطب، والكليات العلمية الأخرى، ولما كان كتاب هاربر موسعاً، وشاملاً لجميع مواضيع الكيمياء الحيوية، وفق المفاهيم الحديثة لهذا العلم، فلم يَعُدْ بإستطاعة الطالب إستيعابها جميعاً؛ فلا بد إذن، من تواجد كتاب وجيز يجمع له النقاط الهامة في الكيمياء الحيوية العامة، وهكذا، كان كتاب كولبي مُحققاً لهذه الغاية.
قُسِّم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أقسام؛ في الأول منها، دراسة لبنية البروتين ووظائفه الهامة في الجسم، ويُعالج القسم الثاني، عمليات الإستقلاب المختلفة في الجسم، أما القسم الثالث، فقد عُنيَّ، بشكل خاص بدراسة علم حياة الخلية.
