هذا الكتاب بناء على دراستنا لكل من أعمال عبد الله العروي ومحمد عابد الجابري، لا نستطيع القول بأننا تجاوزنا إشكالية الحداثة في الفكر المغربي، أو أننا وجدنا الوصفة المناسبة للتعامل مع ماضينا، الماضي الذي مازال يشكل في واقعنا مرجعاً أساسياً، موصولا بمرجعيات أخرى، لم يعد من حقنا الإدعاء بأنها خارج مطلق، يعلو على ذواتنا، فالتفاعلات التي حصلت خلال أزيد من قرن من الزمان بيننا وبين الآخر (الغرب) تدفعنا إلى إدراك التركيب الحاصل في ذواتنا، والحاصل في الآن نفسه، في علاقتنا بهذا الأخر، وفي علاقته بنا.
إذا كان الأمر كذلك، كيف نعيد التفكير في إشكالية استيعاب الحداثة ضمن دائرة الصراع القائم في وطننا وفي العالم، ثك كيف نحل إشكالية الموقف من التراث، في ظل تنامي الأطروحات الداعية إلى نوع من النصية الجديدة الرافضة للغرب؟ كيف يمكن إذن إعادة بناء هذه الإشكالية، في ضوء مستجدات حاضرنا الفكرية والتاريخية العامة؟، قد يكون في الإجابة على مثل هذه الأسئلة، ما يسعف بإدراك مستويات من التغير والتحول، نعتقد أنها مرتقبة في مجال الفكر الفلسفي بالمغرب، وقد تساعدنا الإجابة عليها على إدراك أفضل لطبيعة الصراع القائم في المستوى الفكري، حيث نتأكد بالفعل بأن التغير في التاريخ لا تحكمه حتميات مطلقة ومغلقة قدر ما تؤطره معطيات يصعب حصرها، ومعنى هذا ومعنى هذا في نهاية المطاف أن معارك الحداثة في التاريخ المغربي والعربي ما تزال متواصلة، وأن حسمها لا يمكن رهنه بمواقيت ولا أزمنة محددة، كما لا يمكن ربطه باختيارات ومواقف نظرية وأيديولوجية مغلقة ونهائية، إن المعارك الكبرى في التاريخ لا تنتهي في منازلة أو منازلات متعددة، إن المدى الذي يستنفذها ويولد البدائل الجديدة بواسطتها ومن خلالها هو المدى الزمني الطويل.
