لكل مذهب من المذاهب الفقهية مختصرات معتبرة فيه عكف عليها العلماء فشرحوها وكتبوا عليها الحواشي، ففي الفقه الحنفي نجد مختصر القدوري للإمام أبي محمد خليل بن إسحاق المتوفى سنة (776 هجري)، وفي المذهب الحنبلي نجد مختصر الخرقي للإمام أبي القاسم عمر بن الحسين بن عبدالله المتوفى سنة (334 هجري).
وفي المذهب الشافعي نجد مختصر أبي شجاع للإمام أحمد بن الحسين بن أحمد الأصبهاني المتوفى سنة (593 هجري) وهذا المختصر هو الذي يدور عليه الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا.
وهذا المختصر يسمى باسمين: فيسمى بالتقريب، ويسمى بغاية الاختصار، وهو متن بديع عظيم النفع وصفه الخطيب الشربيني فقال: "كان من أبدع مختصر في الفقه صنف، وأجمع موضوع له فيه على مقدار حجمه ألف"، ولأهمية هذا المتن عكف عليه علماء الشافعية فشرحوه شروحًا ملأت الآفاق.
وشرح الإمام ابن قاسم الغزي- الذي بين أيدينا- هو شرح ميسر للمبتدئين سهل العبارة، شرح وسط لا هو مخل ولا هو ممل، شرح منظم يقسم موضوعات الفقه إلى كتب وفصول.
