إن موضوعنا هنا هو دراسة نفسية الفن، وأيضاً نفسية الإنسان أمام الفن، وقد وجدنا أن تعليل الإنسان الذي هو جوهر الدراسة، من خلال المنطق أو العاطفة وحدهما لا فائدة منه، ومن الأفضل لنا أن نبحث عن سبل أخرى تفتح أمامنا أفاقاً جديدة، فالإبداع الفني لا يستغني عن الخيال، وهو يرتوي من الجوانب الخفية الكامنة في شخصية الفنان، والتي تمتد جذورها في حياته الخاصة المرتبطة بعالم طفولته، وأيضاً بعالم الرمز.
فقد استعان الفنان، وعلى مر التاريخ، بأساليب تحقق تمثيل خبرته في هيئة رموز، صاغها بإستخدام التشبيهات المجازية، والمبالغات من أجل التوصل إلى إستثارة خيال ووجدان المشاهد جمالياً، فإن الذي كان يعينه في الفن ليس ما يراه، وإنما ما يعتقد فيه عن الحقيقة، ومن المؤكد أن في هذه الرؤية تنحصر غاية الفن الأصيل، وقد أدركت الإتجاهات الحديثة في الفن هذه الحقيقة وعملت في ضوئها، وكذلك الإتجاهات التقديمية في مجال التربية الفنية المعاصرة، والتي تفترض أن تفسير السلوك الإبداعي يتطلب فهم طبيعة المبدع ودوافعه وشخصيته الإنسانية.
