إن أولئك الذين تصدوا للإفتاء في شأن الطبيعة وكأن أمرها محسوم ومفروغ منه، سواء كان ذلك عن ثقة ساذجة بالنفس أو عن تقعر أكاديمي، أولئك قد ألحقوا بالفلسفة وبالعلوم أشد الضرر، لقد نجحوا في خنق البحث وإغلاق باب التساؤل لقدر نجاحهم في نشر رأيهم وكسب الآخرين إليه، ولم تؤت جهودهم ذاتها من شيء يعوض ما جنت أيديهم بإخماد جهود غيرهم وإفسادها.
أما أولئك الذين اتخذوا اتجاهًا معاكسًا وقالوا باستحالة معرفة أي شيء، سواء عقدوا هذا الرأي من جراء بغضهم لقدامى السوفسطائيين أو من جراء تردد العقل أو حتى من فرط المعرفة، فمن المؤكد أنهم قدموا لذلك أسبابًا لا يستهان بها؛ إلا أنهم لم يصدروا في رأيهم من مقدمات صحيحة، ولم ينتهوا إلى استنتاجات منصفة، فقد جرفهم الحماس والتكلف بعيدًا عن كل حدود الاعتدال والقصد، أما اليونانيون الأقدم "الذين ضاعت كتاباتهم" فقد اتخذوا موقفًا أكثر حصافة بين هذه الطرفين- بين التوقح الدوجماطيقي واليأس الارتيابي.. بين التجرؤ بالإفتاء في كل شيء واليأس من معرفة أي شيء. وبرغم شكواهم الكثيرة المريرة من مصاعب البحث وغموض الأشياء فقد ظلوا قابضين على الجمر مواصلين مسعاهم ومشتبكين مع الطبيعة، وقد ارتأوا، فيما يبدو أن أفضل طريقة لحسم هذه المسألة ذاتها- مسألة إمكان المعرفة- هي المحاولة لا المجادلة، غير أنهم أيضًا اتكؤوا على قوة أفهامهم وحدها، فلم يتبنوا قواعد محددة، وعولوا في كل شيء على حدة الذهن وعلى النشاط العقلي الدائب والمتصل.
إن منهجي على الرغم من صعوبته في التطبيق، سهل في الشرح، وهو أن نرسى درجات متزايدة من اليقين، أن نستمر في الآخذ بشهادة الحواس، ونساعدها ونحصنها بنوع من التصويب، ولكن نرفض بصفة عامة العملية العقلية التي تتلو الإحساس بل نفتح مسارًا جديدًا للعقل أكثر وثوقًا يبدأ مباشرة من الإدراكات الحقيقة الأولى للحواس نفسها، كانت هذه بدون شلك وجهة أولئك الذين أولوا المنطق دورًا كبيرًا، فمن الواضح أنهم كانوا يبحثون عن نوع من الدعم للعقل، ولا يأمنون لعملياته الطبيعية التلقائية، غير أن هذه العلاج يأتي متأخرًا جدًا، بعد أن استفحل الداء وضاع كل شيء، وأصبح العقل من خلال عادات الحياة اليومية ومداولاتها محشوًا بمذاهب فاسدة وأوهام فارغة.
