يستلهم هذا الكتاب فلسفته وأدواته من الصوريات (Imagologie) التي تعني بما تحمله الأنا (الثقافة الناظرة) من تمثلات حيال الآخر (الثقافة المنظور إليها)، أسهمت عوامل تاريخية في احتدام الصراع بين الطرفين (الذات العربية والآخر / الأجنبي) بالنظر إلى تضارب مصالحهما، واختلاف أنساقهما الثقافية والاجتماعية، وتباين مواقفهما من الوجود، ولم تعمل السنون المتعاقبة إلا على ذر الملح في جراحهما، وتوسيع الهوة بين وجهات نظريهما.
إن الأمر يقتضي من الشعوب جميعها إقامة مصالحة مع ذاتها وغيرها لتضميد الجراح لجسدية والرمزية، وتوفير شروط السلم المستديم، وتعزيز الإنسانية البيئية، وفي هذا الصدد يؤدي السرد دوراً هاماً في تشخيص العوائق التي تحول دون تقارب الشعوب وتفاهمها وتعاوتها، واستنطاق ذخيرة المتخيل الجماعي، واقتراح أشكال جديدة من التفاعل بين الأنا والآخر، وتمثل "مواطنة تخييلية" تحن إلى عصر الملحمة حيث التكامل بين أفعال الروح ومطالبها.
