هذا هو الجزء الثالث من كتاب "جغرافية العالم"، يتناول نصف الكرة الغربي بالدراسة الإقليمية، وقد التزمت فيه خطة الدراسة الإقليمية، رغم تشعب النواحي التي يمكن أن تجتذب الباحث، سواء من الناحية الطبيعية أو الناحية البشرية.
وسيلاحظ القارئ اهتمامي في المقدمات العامة بالناحيتين التاريخية والاجتماعية، وتطور استغلال الإنسان للبيئة ومدى تفاعل النشاط البشري معها، في الظروف التاريخية المختلفة المتتابعة. فأمريكا عالم جديد نمت حضارته ومدنياته الأصلية في معزل عن حضارات العالم القديم ومدنيته، وظل هكذا قرونًا طويلة إلى أن اكتشفه العالم القديم، فتدفقت جموع المهاجرين والمغامرين إلى أمريكا، تحمل صنوفًا من المدنيات الأوربية المختلفة، وألوانًا مختلفة من البشر، التقت بسكان أمريكا الأصليين، وقهرتهم وأزاحتهم من بعض مواطنهم وأنشأت لها أوطانًا جديدة وشيدت عليها مدنية جديدة، مستقلة كل الاستقلال عن المدنيات الأصلية في جزء من العالم الجديد، وممتزجة بهذه المدنيات أو بشعوبها الأصلية على الأقل في جزء آخر. وهي في الحالتين نتاج جديد. غير أن أساس الدراسة في هذا الكتاب هو "وحدة الإقليم"، وشخصيته وما يمتاز به.
وهذا الكتاب ليس سوى مقدمة عامة للدراسة الإقليمية للعالم الذي نعيش فيه، على أساس تحليل العوامل الجغرافية للأقاليم الكبرى، ثم تركيب الصورة المتكاملة الموجودة عليها تلك الأقاليم فعلًا في الطبيعة. وهذه هي مهمة الدراسة الإقليمية مهمة تحليلية تركيبية في آن واحد، وإننا لنرجو أن يتبع هذا الكتاب دراسات تفصيلية أكبر، تقع في عدة أجزاء، نزداد بها فهمًا وعلمًا بعالمنا هذا.
