في الخامس عشر من شهر فبراير عام 1861 ولد ألفرد نورث هوايتهد في مدينة رامز جيت من مقاطعة كانت بإنجلترا، من أسرة اشتغل معظم أفرادها بأعمال تتصل بالتربية وبالكنيسة وبالإدارة المحلية.
وحيث أن كبير الأساقفة في عهد أبيه كان على صداقة معه، فإن كبير الأساقفة هذا كان ينفق ساعات طويلة إبان أشهر الصيف التي كان يقضيها مع (هوايتهد) الوالد، وكانا يتحدثان أحاديث طويلة تمثل-كما يقول ألفرد هوايتهد القرن الثامن عشر في أنصع جوانبه وقد أخذت ثقافة هذا القرن عندئذ تختفي رويداً رويداً لتحل محلها ثقافة القرن التالي-القرن التاسع عشر-وكان ألفرد-الغلام-يستمع إلى تلك الأحاديث، فكان بهذا يشهد-كما يقول تاريخ إنجلترا نابضاً حياً في أشخاص جده وابيه وأصدقائهما، وكان يشهد تاريخ بلاده حياً في هؤلاء الرجال بوعيه الباطن لا بعقله الظاهرن حتى لقد وجد نفسه من أيام نضجه يفهم ثقافة بلاده عن طريق ما كان قد سمتعه ورآه من هؤلاء الرجال.
وهكذا كان الصبي يتنفس في بيئته الأولى أنفاساً تفوح بعطر الماضي التليد، حتى لقد كان يضيق ذرعاً لما كبر-بملاعب "الجولف" التي أنشئت في ذلك المكان لأنه كان يرى تلك الملاعب نهاية رخيصة لقصة مجيدة.
ومع أن (هوايتهد) كان يعد نفسه دائماً إنجيلياً شرقياً ومع أن صورته كانت مثالاً لذلك، إذ كان أشقر اللون، أحمر الوجنتين، أزرق العينين. إلا إنه كان يلحظ من تاريخ أرومته خلطاً خفيفاً يجعله مخالفاً بعض الشيء لهؤلاء الإنجيليين فقد كانت إحدى جداته من ديلز تنتمي إلى أسرة وليامز وكان يختلف عن إخوته اختلافاً يرجع إلى الدم الكلتي الذي كان ينبض في عروقه.
وتقع حياة هوايتد في ثلاث فترات: الفترة الأولى تشمل فترة تربيته وتعليمه حتى دخوله الجامعة (كمبردج) وتخرجه واشتغاله مدرساً بكلية ترنتي حتى عام 1910، أما الفترة الثانية فتشمل انتقاله إلى لندن العاصمة واهتماماته العلمية والرياضية وفي فلسفة العلم هناك، والفترة الثالثة والأخيرة تشمل حياته في أمريكا والتي تبدأ في عام 1924 وتنتهي بوفاته في الثلاثين من شهر ديسمبر عام 1947 وهي الفترة التي ظهرت فيها كل أعماله الفلسفية. وسنتناول نحن حياة ألفرد نورث هوايتهد طبقاً لهذا التقسيم.
