هو أبو عبد الله جمال الدين محمد بن عبد الله بن مالك الطائى الجيانى الأندلسى، ولد فى جيان الحرير - من أعمال الأندلس - سنة 600 هـ= 1203 م على أكثر الرويات وأصحها وذكر بعضهم أنه ولد سنة 598هـ، رحل ابن مالك من الندلس بين 625 و630هـ ليستزيد من علوم العربية ويأخذها عن أثمتها فأخذ القراءات عن أبى العباس بن نوار وقرأ كتاب سيبويه على المرشانى وجالس ابن يعيش وغيره فى حلب وأتقن لسان العرب وكان ابن مالك إماما فى القراءات عالما بها مطلعا على أشعار العرب روايا للحديث الشريف حافظا له ولذا كان أكثر استشهاده بالقرآن فان لم يجد فالحديث فان لم يجد فبأشعار العرب.
