هذا الكتاب "المرأة والسياسة في الإسلام" دراسة لنموذجين من النساء في العصر العباسي الخيزران أم الرشيد وزبيدة زوجته من تأليف المستشرقة "نابيا أبوت" أستاذة الدراسات الإسلامية، جامعة شيكاغو ومن ترجمة الأستاذ "عمر أبو النصر" يعتبر إحدى كتب سلسلة نظرات استشراقية في الإسلام وتاريخه سوف نجد في هذا الكتاب أخباراً مثيرة، ووقائع مذهلة، وحوادث شغلت التاريخ العباسي حاولت المستشرقة "نابيا أبوت" أن تؤرخ فيه للنساء اللاتي لعبن دوراً في الحياة السياسية في عصرهن دون الحياة الأدبية.
من تلك النسوة التي اختارتها الكاتبة لتكون موضع الدراسة والبحث نجد وصفاً لملكتين من ملكات بغداد... (الخيزران) زوجة المهدي وأن هارون الرشيد.. و(زبيدة) زوجته المفضلة.. حيث بدأت صورة تلك السيدتين تتقدمان الأبحاث التاريخية وتخرجان من غرف الحريم لتأخذا مكانهما في صدر التاريخ العباسي الأول -فالأولى تريد أن تحكم الدولة، والثانية تريد أن تدهش البلاد والمجتمع الإسلامي بكرمها وسخائها.
تشير الكاتبة أن تأثير هاتين المرأتين في تاريخ هارون الرشيد وحياته فقد كانت رغبة الخيزران الملحة في الحكم ظاهرة المعالم في عهدي والده وشقيقه. أما زبيدة، فإن تأثيرها اللطيف طال بعد إلى عهد ولديه الأمين والمأمون، ولهذا تكشف هذه الدراسة أن تاريخ هاتيم الملكتين قد أزاح الستار عن أخلاق ومصاير خمسة من الخلفاء العباسيين أتت على ذكرهم الكاتبة في هذه الدراسة.
اعتمدت الكاتبة على مصادر عدة، أكثرها باللغة العربية وأقلها باللغة ألأجنبية، وكان أكثر اعتمادها على المؤرخين القدامى كالطبري، وابن الأثير والمسعودي... الخ.
وكتاب الأغاني والعقد الفريد اقتبست منهم أخبار هاتين الملكتين لتصور لنا الحياة في ذلك العصر الزاهر وملابساتها والأخبار التي نقلت لنا من كتب التاريخ، ولترابط بين هذا وذاك وتخرج لنا هذه الدراسة الهامة عن دور المرأة في العصر العباسي. حيث سنجد في هذا الكتاب صورة صادقة لهارون الرشيد وعصره، وأثر هاتين المرأتين في حياته وحياة من سبقه من الخلفاء، وهي قصة مثيرة وممتعة في آن جديرة بالقراءة.
