هذا كتاب في طبوغرافية بلاد الشام أو ما يعرف باسم سوريا الكبرى منذ عصور ما قبل التاريخ حتى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر ميلادية مروراً بالعصور اليونانية ثم الرومانية ثم العربية الإسلامية ثم فترة الحروب الصليبية.
وهو كتاب موسوعي بإمتياز، يقول عنه عدنان البني، في كتاب "رواد علم الآثار السورية (1860- 1960)"، وزارة الثقافة، دمشق، 2008، ص. 35: "هو أعظم هدية قدمها دوسو للعمل الأثري والتاريخي وللعاملين في هذا المجال.
ولا نعرف أحداً من الباحثين في حقل الآثار السورية والتاريخ السوري سواء في سورية أو في خارجها من عرب أو أجانب لم يرجع إلى هذا الكتاب أكثر من مرة وفي مناسبة إكتشاف كل موقع جديد، بلغ حجمه 500 صفحة واستُقيت مواده من أكثر من 300 مصدر ومرجع منها أكثر من 30 مصدر من أمهات الكتب الجغرافية والمعجمية العربية الإسلامية معززاً ذلك كله بالمخططات المفصلة، وفي هذا الكتاب ألفُ مسألة تاريخية وجغرافية".
ولا تزال الكثير من النظريات والتصحيحات الواردة فيه سارية المفعول ليومنا هذا؛ في المقابل، تغيرت نظريات أخرى وتطورت أو سقطت مع ظهور نتائج التنقيبات الجديدة والدراسات الأحدث التي ربما أظهرت خطأ دوسو في ضبط أو تحديد بعض المواقع الأثرية، مثل غ يره من الباحثين الرواد (وقد كان دوسو مدركاً لهذا الأمر، فقد استخدم كلمة "يمكن ويحتمل وربما" عندما لا يكون متأكداً من أمر ما وأنه نظرية قابلة للنقض)؛ مثلما فعل عندما قال بوضع مَغَرتَريكا عند معرة النعمان.
