يتألف هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا من خمسة فصول يتناول كل منها إحدى الدراسات التي قام بإجرائها المؤلف مستخدماً جداول النشاط المصورة في سبيل تعديل جانب من سلوكيات الأطفال المتخلفين عقلياً، وفي هذا الإطار يعرض الفصل الأول لاستخدام هذه الجداول إلى جانب الإرشاد الأسري في سبيل تحسين مستوى التفاعلات الاجتماعية لهؤلاء الأطفال. يعرض الفصل الثاني لفعالية تدريب الأطفال المتخلفين عقلياً على استخدام تلك الجداول بغرض الحد من سلوكهم العدواني.
أما الفصل الثالث فيتناول استخدام مثل هذه الجداول بهدف الحد من أعراض اضطراب الانتباه من جانب مثل هؤلاء الأطفال. في حين يعرض الفصل الرابع لاستخدام تلك الجداول وإرشاد لأمهات لمتابعة تدريب أطفالهن المتخلفين عقلياً. وثم في هذه الدراسة استخدم برنامج كمبيوتر لقياس مدى التحسس من الانتباه لدى هؤلاء الأطفال من خلال التعرف على متغيرات ثلاثة هي زمن الرجع، ومدى الانتباه، ولا يخفي على القارئ أن هؤلاء الأطفال يعانون من ضعف انتباههم، وقد يصل البعض منهم إلى حد اضطراب الانتباه وهو ما عرض له الفصل الثالث، في حين قد لا يصل البعض الآخر إلى ذلك الحد ويصبح الأمر مجرد ضعف في الانتباه فقط ولكنه لم يرق إلى حد الاضطراب وهو ما عرض له في الفصل الخامس.
يعرض هذا الكتاب لأحداث الاستراتيجيات التي يمكن استخدامها في سبيل تعديل السلوك للأطفال المتخلفين عقلياً والتي تتمثل في جداول النشاط المصورة وذلك في خمس محاولات جادة تتمثل في خمسة بحوث حديثة أجراها المؤلف مستخدماً هذه الاستراتيجية في سبيل تحقيق ما يلي:
1-تحسين مستوى التفاعلات الاجتماعية للأطفال المتخلفين عقلياً.
2-الحد من سلوكهم العدواني.
3-الحد من أعراض اضطراب الانتباه من جانبهم.
4-الحد من أعراض نشاطهم الحركي المفرط.
5-تحسين الانتباه من جانب هؤلاء الأطفال.
وقد تم في الدراستين الأولى والرابعة استخدام الإرشاد الأسري إلى جانب ذلك متمثلاً في إرشاد الأمهات بما يمهد الطريق أمام الباحثين لإجراء المزيد من الدراسات في هذا المجال وأمام المهتمين بهؤلاء الأطفال لاستخدام هذه الاستراتيجية الحديثة في سبيل تعديل سلوكهم..
