تلعب النقود دورا هاما في الحياة الاقتصادية للفرد بحيث أن الأمر لا يحتاج لأن يكون الإنسان اقتصاديا حتى يلمس أهمية النقود وأن مستوى المعيشة الذي يمكن للفرد أن يحققه إنما يتوقف على كمية النقود التي يحصل عليها.
ولا شك أن كل فرد يعلم انه في بعض الأوقات يصعب الحصول على النقود من بعض الأوقات الأخرى كما أن القوة الشرائية للعملة تختلف من وقت لأخر.
ولوعدنا إلى الأحداث الاقتصادية خلال العقود الماضية لوجدنا أن سلوك النقود له أهمية حيوية للاقتصاد القومي والعالمي، ففي الثلاثينيات سادت فترة الكساد والانكماش الاقتصادي وصاحبها حالة انخفاض في الناتج القومي، وكذلك في فرص التوظيف وانكماش في الطلب النقدي. كما عجز الكثير من المدينين عن الوفاء بالتزاماتهم بسبب انخفاض دخولهم، وانخفاض القيمة النقدية لأصولهم. من هنا بدأت كثير من الدول تقلق على وضع عملتها دوليا حتى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية التي كانت تتمتع بمركز عالمي ممتاز للدولار بدأ مركزها يختل وبدأت تقلق من جراء العجز في ميزان المدفوعات.
ومما سبق يستطيع الفرد بخبرته الشخصية مع بعض المعلومات التاريخية والاقتصادية أن يستوضح الدور الذي تلعبه النقود في النظام الاقتصادي ويستشعر العلاقة السببية بين النقود وبين حالة التوظيف ومعدل الناتج الحقيقي والمستوى العام للأسعار وتوزيع الدخل والثروة. ولكي نتعرف ونتفهم على النشاط الاقتصادي وجب علينا أولا معرفة وتفهم العملية النقدية والمصرفية، ولهذا جاء مجال الاقتصاد النقدي الذي يهتم بدراسة وتحليل دور النقود وأهميتها، وذلك بتتبع دوافع ظهورها وتطوراتها التاريخي. كما يدرس أهم النظريات التي تطرقت للنقود بدءا من النظريات التقليدية وصولا للنظريات النقدية الحديثة، كما يهتم هذا الجانب من الدراسة بالمؤسسات النقدية التي تقوم بإصدار وإدارة النقود بأشكالها المختلفة في سوق النقد، ونقصد بذلك البنوك التجارية والبنوك المركزية، وكيفية إدارة هذا الأخير للسياسة النقدية، من أجل الحفاظ على التوازنات الاقتصادية الكلية.
