يدرس هذا الكتاب في أربعة فصول مسبوقة بمدخل عام، تداخل الأجناس في أدب الرحلة من خلال عناوين أساسية، هي: الظاهرة الأدبية بين نظرية الأنساق والنماذج التجريبية، سردية النص الرحلي، نسق العلوم في الرحلة، مستدعياً في دراسته جميع التغيّرات التي عرج عليها مفهوم الرحلة والتعريفات التي قدمت لهذا المفهوم في الثقافة العربية.
في المجال الجغرافيّ تحيل الدراسة إلى المغرب بوصفه أفقاً للفكر، أما في المجال الزماني فإنه يقاس على فترة محددة في التاريخ الإنساني عموماً، والتاريخ المغربي خصوصاً هي زمن العلويين.
يطلق الباحث مفهوم الجنس على مسارين بحثيين أولهما: مسار العلوم، وثانيهما مسار الأجناس الأدبية في الظاهرة الأدبية المسماة "الرحلة"، وينطلق الباحث في دراسته من نص "الترجمانة الكبرى في إخبار المعمور براً وبحراً" لأبي القاسم ابن أحمد الزياني المولود في فاس سنة 7411هـ والمتوفى سنة 9421هـ وقد جمع فيه رحلات إحداها رحلة سفارية والأخريات رحلتان شخصيتان.
سعى الباحث كما يتضح من متن الدراسة إلى إستقراء النصوص الرحلية الواردة في الموضوع في سياقين مختلفين: سياقٌ يستشكلُ النصوص بإعتماد المناهج الغربية المتعلقة بالنموذج، لأنها توخى دوراً يؤرخ للنصوص الرحلية المغربية عامة، ولــ "الترجمانة الكبرى" خاصة، ويصفها ويؤولها بإعتماد مستويات منهجية متفاوتة، وسياقٍ تابع للمجال التداولي الإسلامي راهن على قراءة التراث بالتراث، إنطلاقاً من الكشف عن تركيب النص المزدوج.
