يعد كتاب "المقنع" للإمام موفق الدين المقدسي من أهم الكتب المدونة في الفقه على المذهب الحنبلي، وتبرز أهمية من كونه يتناول جميع الموضوعات الفقهية بدءاً بالعبادات ومروراً بالمعاملات وانتهاءً بالمواريث والنكاح والطلاق وغير ذلك. هذا الشمول هو ما دفع الإمام شرف الدين الحجاوي للقيام بتدوين مختصر لهذا الكتاب عنونه بـ "زاد المستنفع"، واقتصر الكلام على القول الأصح، فكان بالتالي من أهم مختصرات كتاب المقنع وكان بمثابة زاد لطالب الفقه.
ولكنه ككل كتاب مختصر يحتاج إلى بعض الشرح، وهذا دفع الإمام البهوتي للقيام بتدوين شرح على "زاد المستنقع عنوانه بالروض المربع شرح زاد المستنقع مختصر المقنع" فكان هذا الشرح بمثابة رزاد لطلاب العلم وبخاصة أتباع مذهب الإمام أحمد بن حنبل. ويمتاز الكتاب بأسلوبه فقد مال المؤلف فيه للسلاسة والسهولة وعدم التعقيد، بالإضافة إلى أنه كتاب مختصر في المذهب الحنبلي، فقد احتوى على كافة المواضيع في العقائد والعبادات والمعاملات، في غير أن يجل هذا الاختصار باللفظ والمعنى.
إن كتاب الروض المربع شرح زاد المستنقع مختصر المقنع للعلامة المحقق الشيخ منصور بن يونس البهوتي الحنبلي من أهم الكتب الفقهية على مذهب الإمام المبجل أحمد بن حنبل وأكثرها بركة وتداولاً. وقد أكتسب هذه المكانة الرفيعة من منزلة مؤلف المتن والشارح، فهما من أئمة المذهب ومحققيه، وعلى كتبهما التعويل والاعتماد.
