الدراسات التي يتضمنها الكتاب هي الحلقات الأهمّ في سلسلة طويلة ومتّصلة من الدراسات النظرية والتجريبية التي كرّسها المؤلف لمعالجة المشكلة المفتاحية في علم النفس، نشأة النفس وتطورها لدى البشر.
ويكتسي الإضطلاع بهذه المهمّة أهميّة علميّة وعمليّة على صعيد ما تقدّمه من إجابات عن التساؤلات المطروحة على علماء النفس والمربّين.
لمعرفة طبيعة النفس ومحدّداتها ينطلق المؤلّف من نظرته إلى الفرد كطرفٍ إيجابيّ، فاعل في عملية تكوّنه النفسي، ويتجلى ذلك في ما يبديه الحيوان من فاعلية في البحث عما يضمن بقاءه عبر إنعكاس مختلف صفات مكوّنات العالم المادي الخارجي وقيامه بما من شأنه تلبية حاجاته، وتجنب ما يهدّد وجوده.
ومن هذا المنظور يتناول مسائل التطوّر الحيويّ للنفس وإرتقائها لدى الحيوان، وصولاً إلى ظهور الوعي عند الإنسان كشكلٍ راقٍ من أشكال النفس، يختلف جذرياً عن أشكالها لدى الحيوانات، حتّى الراقية منها.
ويرجع هذا الإختلاف إلى الطبيعة التاريخية - الإجتماعية للنفس البشرية، وظهور قوانين وآليات تخضع لها عملية إستحواذ الفرد على الخبرة الإجتماعية التي تراكمت عبر العصور، وإنتقالها من السلّف إلى الخلف.
