يضم هذا الكتاب بين طياته ترجمة لروايتي "إميل فرنسوا زولا" الأولى "اعتراف كلود" بطل هذه الرواية كلود ليس إلا زولاً بعينه، والبطلة هي "بيرت" فتاة من الشعب عرفها من طريق صديقه الرسام سيزان. ويحاول كلود أن ينتشل هذه الفتاة الساقطة في براثن الرذيلة دون جدوى، فيذهب إلى مسقط رأسه ليستنشق الهواء النقي الطهور.
والواضح أن زولا تأثر في كتابة روايته هذه المشعبة بالرومانسية والرقة العاطفية بمؤلف ألفرد دو موسيه "اعترافات أحد أبناء العصر".
أما الرواية الثانية التي ترجمها الكتاب فهي سعادة السيدات في هذه الرواية تناول زولا الدراسات الاجتماعية بصفتها وثائق إنسانية يفضح بواساطتها مجتمعاً مقبلاً على السقوط والتفكك، مجتمعاً أنانياً جشعاً تافهاً لا يعرف الرحمة، تعيش فيه أرستقراطية متعطلة ضارة، لا هم لها إلا السهر على مصالحها الخاصة، ولا تنظر بعين العطف إلى بؤس الفقراء.
