يعتبر كتاب "المقتضب" للمبرد من أكبر مصنفاته النحوية وأنفسها إلا أنه لم ينتفع فيه أحد، وكان المبرد آخر أئمة المدرسة الدهرية المهيمن، فهو بحسب تعبير ابن جني: "معد جيلاً في العلم، وأليه أفضت مقالات: أصحابنا (يريد البصريين)، وهو الذي نقلها وقررها، وأجرى الفروع والعلل والمقاييس عليها" والمبرّد لم يذكر الكوفيين في كتابه المقتضب إلا نادراً، وكنى عنهم بـ "قوم في النحويين" أو "قوم". وقد أقسم منهجه البصري بما يلي: الاستشهاد بآيات القرآن الكريم، وقد تجاوزت هذه الآيات الخمسمائة، الإكثار من الاستشهاد وبالشواهد الشعرية التي يحتج بها، وقد بلغت هذه الشواهد 560 شاهداً، وقد كرر المبرد بعضها، قلة أو ندرة الاستشهاد بالحديث النبوي الشريف، وذلك على منهج معظم النحويين البصريين والكونيين، الاستشهاد بالأمثال العربية وببعض النثر، الالتزام بالقياس التزاماً شديداً دفعه إلى تخطي بعض الروايات التي تخالف القياسي.
وضع مقدمة في حياة المبرد وآثاره، تضمنت التعريف بكتبه المطبوعة والمخطوطة، وبين مالها من أثر في الدراسات الأدبية والنحوية، ثم تحدث عن أسلوب المبرد العلمي وملامحه وخصائصه وإصطلاحاته، وعرض لمذهبه النحوي وإتجاهاته وموقفه من القياس والسماع.
كما عرض لذكر الخصومة التي بينه وبين ثعلب وأسبابها ونتائجها، ثم تعرض لغيره من العلماء الذين نقدوه، وانتصر له، واختتم هذه الدراسة بفصل واف عن المقتضب، ووازن بينه وبين كتاب سيبويه، وساق كل ذلك في أسلوب واضح وإستقراء شامل.
