بحث في الدلالة النحوية عند عالم من علماء العربية الذين ترأسوا مدرسة البصرة ألا وهو المبرد (ت 285هـ)، وبالتحديد في كتابه المقتضب. غايته بيان العلاقة بين التراكيب النحوية التقعيدية مع ملاءمتها المعنى، إذ المعنى هو مدار الفكر- إن صح التعبير- ولما كانت الأشياء ليس لها معان فلا تعني شيئاً؛ حيث كل شئ في الطبيعة وضع من أجل أن يكون له معنى معين، لذلك نحن ندرس هذه الظاهرة لكونها مرتبطة بواقع الإنسان من جهة، ومن جهة أخرى بما يحيط به بشكل عام.
والبحث في الدلالة النحوية يعني دراسة المعنى النحوي إذ المعنى: "عبارة عن الموقف الذي يتم فيه الحدث اللغوي المعين والاستجابة أو رد الفعل الذي يستدعيه هذا الحدث في نفس السامع"، ومن الملاحظ أن دراسة المعنى في الدراسات الشائكة في الدرس اللغوي؛ لأن كل بنية في الكلام إذا اختلفت اختلف المعنى، وكما يقول المبرد إذ يرى أن "كل ما يصلح به المعنى فهو جيد، وكا ما فسد به المعنى فمردودو"، ولما كان التركيب غاية من أهم الغايات التي يسعى إليها البحث في اللغة فإن التركيب النحوي هو اللبنة الأساسية لدراسة الدلالة النحوية أو المعنى النحوي، إذ يمكن القول: إن المعنى النحوي يتجلى بدراسة العلاقة بين القاعدة النحوية ودلالة المفردة داخل التركيب وتضافرها مع السياق، ومن خلال هذه الفكرة التي سعى الباحث لإثباتها في بحث علمي يعتمد على الأدلة والبراهين.
