لقد اهتم العلماء المسلمون بعلم الحديث إهتماماً بالغاً فوضعوا الكثير من المصنفات التي تناولت بالبحث والتمحيص مصطلحه وعلومه وشملت رواية الحديث وأحوال رواته، ومنها (علم الحديث) الذي تنوع فيه التأليف واتسع فشمل صنوفاً كثيرة من التأليف، واتخذ أشكالاً مختلفة لعرض الحديث وظهر أئمة تفقهوا بعلومه عموماً فاق تعلقهم بعلم التاريخ بمراحل.
إن أي بناء علمي أو تاريخي سرعان ما يسمي ضعيفاً مهزوزاً متداعي الأركان إذا لم يبن على دراسة علمية مستفيضة، والمؤرخ جزء من التاريخ وهو نتاجه، وفي ضوء ذلك فإن النظرة الصائبة للتاريخ تدعونا أن ننظر إليه كشيء كتبه الأفراد عن الأحداث والوقائع.
فالمؤرخ هو كائن بشري فرد يشكل ظاهرة إجتماعية، وهو الناطق الواعي بإسم المجتمع الذي ينتمي إليه ويعيش فيه وهو يعالج حقائق الماضي التاريخية، يحدثنا عما بين السطور، ومنذ ذلك الزمان وحتى الآن ظهر أن العمل الأساس للمؤرخ ليس التدوين فقط وإنما التقييم، أي العناية بمعرفه قيمة الأشياء التي تستحق التدوين، فالحقائق التاريخية لا تصل إلينا مطلقة بصورة بحتة لأنها لا توجد ولا يمكن أن توجد على تلك الشاكلة لأنها دائماً تعكس من خلال ذهن المؤرخ وفهمه للأحداث.
من هنا، كان لزاماً عليّ عندما درست كتاب التاريخ لأبي زرعة الدمشقي ألاّ ينصب إهتمامي على الحقائق التي تتضمنها المدوّنة التاريخية، وإنما على المؤرخ الذي كتبها، وأي هاجس استحوذ على تفكيره، والإنتباه لعملية الهمس التي يقولها، فلم يكن بوسعي أن أفهم أنا زرعة بصورة كاملة ما لم أستوعب المنطلق الذي نظر به إلى العمل والذي هو نفسه متجذر في خلفية إجتماعية وتاريخية وثقافية معينة.
يتألف الكتاب من مقدمة وثلاثة أبواب وخاتمة وملاحق تتضمن جداول لبعض المعلومات المستقاه من كتابه التاريخ، الباب الأول: حياة أبي زرعة وعصره، الباب الثاني: منهج أبي زرعة الدمشقي، الباب الثالث: محتويات الكتاب وأسس إنتقاء مادته.
