أحمد بن محمد بن زياد بن بشر بن درهم، أبو سعيد بن الأعرابي، زاهد صوفي من أيمة العارفين بالله تعالى، وكان عالما بالحديث والطبقات.
ومن المعروف أن أبا سعيد الأعرابي صحب طاووس الصوفية الجنيد، كذلك صحب أبا حامد القلانسي الصوفي. وكان متسننا عالما بحديث رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم) عالى الإسناد، يعد من ثقات المحدثين
طريقته الصوفية بالكتاب والسن، وذلك لأن ابن الأعرابي كان عالما بالآثار والسنة. فكان لا يأخذ إلا عن أصل صحيح من السنة أو عن أصحاب رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وكان يرى "إنما التصوف والتأله والسلوك والسير والمحبة، وجاء عن أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم من الرضا عن الله، ولزوم تقوى الله، والجهاد في سبيل الله، والتأدب بآداب الشريعة من التلاوة بترتيل وتدبر، والقيام بخشية وخشوع، وصوم وقت، وإفطار وقت، وبذل المعروف، وكثرة الإيثار، وتعليم العوام، والتواضع للمؤمنين، والتعزز على الكافرين، ومع هذا فالله يهدي من يشاء إلى صراط مستقيم، والعالم إذا عرى من التصوف والتأله فهو فارغ، كما أن الصوفي إذا عرى من علم السنة، زل عن سواء السبيل. وقد كان ابن الأعرابي من علماء الصوفية، فتراه لا يقبل شيئا من اصطلاحات القوم إلا بحجة.
ومن مؤلفاته هذا الكتاب ومخطوطه تقع في اثنين وثلاثين ورقة، وبعد.. فإن الكتابات عديدة في الزهد، فمن أشهر من كتب فيه الإمام أحمد بن حنبل رضي الله عنه صاحب كتاب الزهد، وأيضا "الشلمعاني" صاحب كتاب "الزهاد" وابن بابويه وله "كتاب الزهد" وأبى حمزة ثابت بن دينار الكوفي وله أيضا "كتاب الزهد"، و"كتاب الزهد" لأبن فضال الكوفي، و"كتاب الزهد" للحافظ أبي محمد بن عبدالرحمن بن أبي حاتم، ثم هذا الكتاب يسهم مساهمة كبرى في إثراء المكتبة الإسلامية "كتاب فيه معنى الزهد والمقالات وصفة الزاهدين" لأبي سعيد الأعرابي.
