تناول الكتاب العجز المتعلم وهو احد المشكلات ويعرف العجز المتعلَّم (المكتسب) وهو نزعة يكف بها الكائن عن بذل أي جهد لضبط البيئة والسيطرة عليها لإعتقاده وإدراكه بانه عاجز عن أن يفعل شيئاً، وأنه لايتوقع أن يكون لسلوكه أي قيمة، ولهذا فان محاولاته الرامية لتحسين وضعه تتوقف، بل أنه يميل إلى السلبية (الاستسلام) في تحمل المواقف المؤلمة وتلقي العقوبة مع توجيه ملامة لنفسه وتدني تقديرلذاته، وكثيراً مايكون العجز المتعلَّم سبباً للاكتئاب كما تناول الأساليب المعرفية والتي تشير إلى الطريقة التي يدرك ويعالج بها الفرد المعلومات من حيث أسلوبه في التفكير، أو الفهم، أو الاسترجاع وتنظيم العلاقات المتضمنة في موقف من المواقف، والتي لها علاقة بالحكم على الموقف وأسلوبه في حل المشكلات. ولكل فرد أسلوبه الخاص في إدراك الموقف والاشياء المحيطة به، وهناك من تكون طريقته في تنظيم ومعالجة علاقات الموقف بنظرة كلية شاملة لعناصره أو بنظرة تحليلية.وأن أكثر الأساليب المعرفية استخداماً هو أسلوب الاستقلال الإدراكي والاعتماد الإدراكي وهو مقياس لقدرة الطالب في السيطرة على تأثير عوامل المجال المشتتة عندما يحاول التفريق بين الجوانب المختلفة
