لقد احتل عبد الناصر من حقول الصحف وعناوينها البارزة حيزا ضخما إلى ابعد الحدود حتى لقد أصبحت لفظة الناصرية تطلق, عموما, على ذلك الشكل من القومية الذى يدعوه العرب أنفسهم الحركة العربية المتحررة.
وإذ كنا نحن الصحافيين يعوزنا تعبير أفضل, فإننا نجد تعبير الناصرية ملائما جدا, خاصة ونحن مضطرون فى كتاباتنا الصحافية إلى أن نضغط الكلمات ونختصرها إلى أبعد حدود الضغط والاختصار
واستعمال هذا التعبير صحيح إذا أردنا منه أن عبد الناصر يمثل أو يرمز إلى الحركة القومية فى العالم العربى. ولكن استعماله يكون غير صحيح إذا فهمنا منه أن عبد الناصر هو الذى أوجد تلك الحركة, أو ان تلك الحركة موهونة به أو متوقفة عليه.
ففى ثنايا هذا الكتاب كله حاولت أن أوكد أن ما يدعى بالناصرية كان قائما فى الشرق الأوسط, قبل أن يظهر عبد الناصر على المسرح السياسى بزمن طويل جدا. ففى عام 1882, أى قبل أن يولد عبد الناصر, أرسل البريطانيون قوة عسكرية إلى مصر لكى يسحقوا ثورة عرابى وهى حركة ناصرية إلى حد بعيد.
وعندما كان عبد الناصر لايزال طفلا فى بنى مر تعين على البريطانيين أن يسحقوا عددا من الثورات العنيفة فى مصر والعراق, اللتين كانتا تندفعان فى طريق الثورة تلك تحت تأثير القوة التى ندعوها اليوم الناصرية, وحوالى الوقت نفسه, تعين على فرنسا وإسبانيا أن تقذفا بقوات ضخمة الى شمالى افريقيا لتقمعا ثورة بربرية قادها زعيم الريف, الأمير عبد الكريم الخطابى, الذى كان يعمل بتأثير الحافز نفسه الذى يعمل عبد الناصر بتأثيره.
